Economic Potentials

MINERAL RESOURCES IN FUNTUA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, IDENTIFIED BY THE COMMITTEE SET UP BY THE KATSINA STATE GOVERNOR BARRISTER IBRAHIM SHEHU SHEMA FOR THE PROMOTION OF INDUSTRIES IN THE STATE.

1. FIRE/LATERITIC CLAY : - Refractory’s are materials mostly non-metallic minerals that have enormous heat capacities and can withstand high temperatures as well as other strains exerted on them such as abrasion, impact, thermal shock, chemical attack and high level loads at elevated temperature.

Quantity	Very large
Quality	Very good grade
Uses/Application	Fire clay suitable for used produced engineering high temperature resistant refractory’s and also suitable in the production of high quality bricks block, floor and wall tiles.
Work done	The State Government has established a bricks Industry at Funtua

2. MICA (MUSCOUVITE): - It is widely distributed in igneous rock.

Quantity	Large quantity identified
Quality	Very good sheets of both transparent and black mica available.
Uses/Application	Electrical insulation, electronic U tubes, Capacitors, Pressing iron elements, Paper coatings, wet ground mica is used for reinforce solvent and aqueous system paints or increased weather ability, durability, greater resistance to moisture and atmospheric corrosion, used also as a mould lubricant in molded rubber products and in wall paper finishes, dry powder used in fire extinguishers, in oil well drilling mud etc.

3. QUARTZ :- Pure while, Smoky, Rose, Milky, expensive, Amherst were all identified in the Local Government.

Quantity	Appreciable quantity can be sourced.
Uses/Application	For decorative purposes.

4. TOPAZ AND TOURMALINE: - Topaz occurs typically in granite pegmatite, rhyolites and Quartz veins it also occurs as grains in granites which have subjected to alteration by fluorine bearing solutions and is accompanied by fluorite, tourmaline, apatite, beryl and cassiterite. Topaz also occurs as worn grains and pebbles in alluvial deposit.

Uses/Application	It is used as gemstone.
Work done	Mapped by geological Survey Department.

5. MANGANESE: -

Quantity/Quantity	200,000 tones
Uses/Application	In making alloys, foundries and dry cell batteries.
Work done	Detailed work carried out by National Steel Council (NSC).

AGRICULTURAL RESOURCES IN FUNTUA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, IDENTIFIED BY THE COMMITTEE SET UP BY THE KATSINA STATE GOVERNOR BARRISTER IBRAHIM SHEHU SHEMA FOR THE PROMOTION OF INDUSTRIES IN THE STATE.

The local government is traditionally an agricultural area both rainy and dry season farming is practiced in the Area. The industrial potential for Agriculture resources includes the following:

1	Maize		Which is used in the production of Animal feeds, starch, alcohol, oil, adhesive, body foods, flour, macaroni, semovita etc. the corn stalk is used in the production of saw dust cement flour tiles and wall claddings.
	QUANTITY		The Local government produces maize in commercial quantity.
2	SOYA BEANS		Use as food, soup condiment, production of soya milk and powder milk, baby food, soya flower and cooking oil also used in the production of livestock feeds.
	QUANTITY		Very large quantity
3	SORGHUM/MILLET		Used as food, production of baby foods, corn flakes, sorghum malt, extracted for used in confectioneries, production of livestock feeds, starch production for textiles and pharmaceuticals industries, stalk used in the production of saw dust cement floor tiles.
	QUANTITY		Extremely large quantity is produced in the Local Government.
4	GROUND NUT		Used in the production of ground nut oil, butter, livestock feeds, ceiling particle board from pulverized ground nut shells, also used in confectioneries.
	QUANTITY	An estimate of 204,691 tones per annum in the State.
5	SHEA NUTS		Shea nuts greatest domestic used is as Shea butter oil which is mostly used in traditional medicines fuel and cosmetics and also used in soap industries.
	QUANTITY	Large quantity.
6	HIDES AND SKINS		Used in leather industries, edibles, pharmaceuticals industries, emulsifiers and gelatins.
	QUANTITY	Very large quantity.
7	RED SORREL RUMX ACCETOSA (SOBORODO)		Used as food in a beverages.
	QUANTITY	Large quantity
